About this book

The Adventurous Seven: Their Hazardous Undertaking is a story by Bessie Marchant. Nealie Plumstead can mostly laugh in spite of troubles, and the story recalls how the dear mother sank out of life, leaving a distracted husband and seven children to mourn their loss. Dr. Plumstead sees them safely settled and, on the day that Ducky is one month old, sets off on the voyage to Australia with a heartbreaking goodbye.

Rupert sits under the wagon tilt choking with dust, and the way grows wilder and rougher with nothing to be seen save rolling downs and broad sheep paddocks. Vast herds of cattle, driven down to the coast to be turned into chilled beef for exportation, pass them all day. An old woman whispers, “That is your pa, Miss dear,” and says they think he is going fast, and Nealie gives a frightened gasp and falls on her knees by the bed.
