About this book
The contents of The Age of the Crusades list preliminary study, the state of society, chivalry and the feudal system among the subjects to be considered. The account introduces Godfrey of Bouillon as the most prominent figure among an order of men it regards as far loftier than those already described. The portrait of Godfrey of Bouillon attributes courage and sagacity to him, while presenting his extraordinary strength through an account explicitly marked as reputed.
Dandolo proposed transporting all the soldiers by fleet and assaulting the city's water wall, where the Greeks had left the fortifications weakest while relying on their ships. The crusaders, described as accustomed only to land operations, were averse to that plan and marched around the end of the Golden Horn.
