About this book
Promises of effortless success fill the conversation in Ben Jonson's London comedy. Face tells a young man that a doctor can teach him how to handle quarrels, gain standing in town and live by his wits. Mathematical language gives these unlikely claims an air of authority. Dapper becomes another example of promised good fortune, with gaming wins supposedly large enough to transform his position.
Written in 1610, The Alchemist makes city life the setting for a satire of ambition and credulity. Its verse dialogue lets extravagant claims build through quick exchanges, while the prospective client's doubts interrupt Face's confident salesmanship. Readers interested in early English theater can see how specialized vocabulary becomes a comic instrument. The scene also offers a recognizable account of persuasion: a listener's wish for status makes an improbable offer harder to dismiss.
