About this book
The Unknown Eros is a book by Coventry Patmore. The preface to the third edition says all the other poems its writer has written are added to this edition, and calls the verse “catalectic verse.” The preface says nearly all English metres owe their existence as metres to “catalexis,” or pause, for the time of one or more feet.
One poem calls its subject “my Land,” which lies “weary of the greatness of her ways,” with “hasty pulse and hard.” A line of verse asks, “What if this Lady be thy Soul, and He Who claims to enjoy her sacred beauty be, Not thou, but God.” A passage of verse describes bags being filled and ranked fivefold and a treasure poured on the barn’s clean floor.
