About this book

Fear, reward and reputation complicate the task of identifying a morally good action. Arthur Schopenhauer examines that problem in an essay on the foundations of ethics, translated into English by Arthur Brodrick Bullock. Its opening sections challenge Kant’s account of duty and conscience before turning to justice, loving-kindness and the motives behind human conduct. The translator’s introduction explains the argument’s structure and the dispute surrounding its submission to the Danish Royal Society of Sciences.

The discussion reaches beyond abstract rules into the pressures of everyday life. Schopenhauer considers commercial trust, poverty, social standing and the wish to appear respectable, distinguishing conduct driven by self-interest from freely given kindness. His sharp treatment of rival theories gives readers a way to compare competing accounts of moral worth. The book suits those interested in how ethical arguments connect principles with observable actions and character.

About the author

Arthur Schopenhauer

Arthur Schopenhauer (1788-1860) was a German philosopher whose bleak, will-centered metaphysics and elegant prose influenced Nietzsche, Wagner, Tolstoy, and Freud. Long ignored in his lifetime, he found fame only in his final years, and his pessimism became one of the nineteenth century's most distinctive philosophical voices.
