About this book
One single thought, Schopenhauer says in his first preface, is all this book sets out to give, though he found no shorter way of giving it than the whole work. The first of three volumes in the Haldane and Kemp translation holds four books: the world as idea, the world as will, the Platonic Idea and art, and the assertion and denial of the will to live. The German title is Die Welt als Wille und Vorstellung, and the translators explain why they render Vorstellung as idea.
