Wally Wilson opens with a strong hand, but his opponents can shield their minds, read his thoughts and send misleading signals. The game breaks up when Tomboy Taylor brings a demand from Joseph Barcelona: three unlikely horses must finish the Kentucky Derby in a particular order.
Wally's knowledge of racing puts him under pressure from Barcelona, while Lieutenant Delancey arrives with mental clues to the scheme. In The Big Fix, psychic abilities complicate bluffing, bargaining and police work. Taylor's skill at concealing her thoughts makes her exchanges with Wally another contest of tactics. The brisk dialogue and Wally's wry observations give the story a comic edge. Its appeal lies in watching familiar problems of trust and secrecy take new forms when minds can be read.
