About this book
The Billow and the Rock is by Harriet Martineau. Chapter One, headed Lord and Lady Carse, says that Scotland was a strange and uncomfortable country to live in a hundred years ago. The text says that Scotland had not long been united with England.
Lady Rachel goes to bed very miserable one night and wishes that Lady Carse and King George, and all the House of Brunswick, had never existed. Lady Carse says that if God gives her to see her children she will thank him devoutly, but that there is another thing she wants more, revenge on all her enemies, and on her husband first. The President tells Sir Alexander that his course in regard to this lady is now clear, and that if the rebellion succeeds the leaders should find that he has taken out of their hands this weapon, which they might otherwise use for his destruction.
