About this book

London under James I provides the setting for Walter Scott's historical novel, where rank, money and reputation shape a young nobleman's prospects. Scott's introduction explains his choice of George Heriot, the king's goldsmith and an Edinburgh benefactor, as a figure of practical generosity. He sets Heriot's steady judgment against aristocratic pride and the costly habits of fashionable society.

Margaret tells Lady Hermione that Lord Dalgarno has drawn Lord Glenvarloch into a gambling house under the appearance of friendship. She describes efforts to damage his standing and asks Hermione to help him through her wealth. Their conversation brings the larger social tensions into a personal appeal: influence can serve either deception or assistance. Readers interested in historical fiction can follow how Scott connects private loyalties with the pressures of court life and social ambition.
