About this book
The Boke of Saint Albans is by Dame Juliana Berners and contains treatises on hawking, hunting, and cote armour, reproduced in facsimile with an introduction by William Blades. A verse from Sir Thomas More’s Poems says that manhood takes delight to hunt and hawke, to nourish up and fede the greyhounde to the course, the hawke to th’ flight.
The text explains terms used in armys, naming Demy as halfe a best in the felde and Countretreuis as halfe the beest of oon coloure and the other halfe of an other coloure. An entry reads He berith asure and a cros masculatit of Syluer, and another cross is called the cros of a milne. The treatise says that after saynt Margaretis day the birds it describes fly from tree to tree and are then called Brawncheris.
