The Book of the Lover and the Beloved is by Ramon Llull. The preface says that more than six centuries have passed since this little Majorcan classic was written, and that, so far as the writer can find, it has never once been translated into English.
One numbered item says the Lover was sent by his Beloved to Christian princes and to unbelievers. Another numbered item says that in a lover clothed in fine raiment, prizing vainglory, sated with food and sleep, you see damnation and torment, and in a lover poorly clothed, despised by the world, pale and thin with fast and vigil, you see salvation and everlasting weal. A further item has the Lover meet an astrologer, who calls astrology a science that foretells things to come, and the Lover answers that the astrologer is deceived and that it is no science, but one falsely so called.
