About this book
Ruysbroeck and the Mystics, with selections from Ruysbroeck, is by Maurice Maeterlinck, translated by Jane T. Stoddart. The writer warns that “Before entering here one must be in a philosophic state as different from our ordinary condition as the state of waking is from that of slumber.” The text says it is strangely cold here and strangely dark, and yet all around there is light and flame.
A mysterious stone is, according to the monk of the forest of Soignes, the symbol of Christ, given to His loved ones only, and like a flame which images the love of the eternal Word. A passage the writer examines speaks of “an inward exercise above reason and without restraint.” Great banquets of food and drink are described, which none knoweth saving he who partakes of them, but full satisfaction of joy is the food which is ever lacking, and so the hunger is perpetually renewed.
