About this book
The Sea and Its Living Wonders, by G. Hartwig, offers a popular account of the deep and of maritime discovery from the earliest ages. The discussion of sea temperature describes water as a poor conductor of heat and says sea temperatures are generally more constant than those of air. The account of crustaceans notes the particular parasites associated with different fishes and suggests that a large number of species must still remain unknown.
Crustaceans are described as forming a great part of the food of sea-stars, sea-urchins, annelides, many molluscs, fishes and sea-birds. The account of D'Urville's arrival describes inhabitants as extremely distrustful and shy, with their fears gradually giving way when they find themselves treated with invariable kindness.
