About this book
The commentary describes two leading priestly families in David's day, represented by Zadok and Abiathar, within its discussion of the supreme priestly office. The account says Solomon deposed Abiathar, fulfilling the curse upon the house of Eli, and that the line of Zadok thereafter held the supreme priestly office alone. A note argues that the notice about Azariah's priestly service belongs to the Azariah who would have been contemporary with Solomon.
The commentary describes delight in magnifying the Temple, its ritual and its officers, with an interest that exceeds an immediate polemical aim. The commentary suggests a possible hope of inspiring less ardent brethren with love for the Temple’s well-being.
