About this book

H. Irving Hancock's Uncle Sam's Boys in the Ranks has the subtitle Two Recruits in the United States Army. The contents list begins with chapters titled A Lesson in Respect for the Uniform, At the Recruiting Office, The Ordeal of Examination and In the Awkward Squad, and later ones include Guarding the Mail Train and The Rookies Reach Fort Clowdry.

In one passage Hal Overton and Noll, who are going to be regulars in the Army, spend what is likely their last day in the home town with two younger boys, Jud and Tom, who admire them. The boys mention Tip Branders, a loafer who chased Jud and Tom the day before. In a scene by a train, a masked man comes forward with his hands raised and gives himself up to Major Davis, while Hal and Noll cover him. Another passage mentions a trial in the United States District Court for men who tried to rob the mail.
