About this book
The Camp-fires of Napoleon is credited to Henry C. Watson. The text describes the night of the 22nd of April, 1796, after the desperate battle of Mondovi. The text says the dispirited army of Colli had been overtaken by two divisions of Bonaparte's army, commanded by Serrurier and Massena.
The text has Bennigsen, surrounded by his lieutenants, deliberating whether to resume the offensive and try the effect of one more effort. The text says that, out of an army of eighty thousand men, not more than forty thousand were left in a state to fight, the Prussians included. The text says Napoleon had spirit to write to Caulaincourt to revoke his carte blanche, saying that the capital was now saved.
