About this book
The title page says the thesis was presented for the degree of Master of Science at the College of Hawaii in June 1915 by Alice A. Ball. The title gives the subject as the chemical constituents of Piper methysticum, or of the active principle of the Ava root. The text defines the iron acids as the resinous material prepared and so named under the Method of Separation. The text expresses the acid number as the number of milligrams of KOH required to neutralize the free acids in one gram of the substance.
The text records that an attempt was made to saponify some of the iron acid, but it was impossible. The text says that as early as 1844 Morson discovered an active principal Kawine, a greenish-yellow, strongly aromatic and acrid resin. The text says that by fractional sublimation it was possible to obtain fractions with different melting points, the first sublimate melting sharply at 109 degrees.
