About this book
The preface describes a compilation of articles republished with a few additions and corrections. The proposed arrangement begins with superstitions relating to birth, marriage and death, before turning to beliefs about the good or evil luck attached to days or seasons. The outline names lucky numbers, portents, auguries and dreams, followed by popular beliefs in charms, spells and divinations.
The discussion of supernatural beliefs includes witchcraft and demonology, with sprites, elves and fairies among its subjects. The outline assigns a section to dragons, serpents, fabulous animals and monsters in the popular legends of China. The account of burial customs notes surviving traces of superstitions about the depth, direction and lucky aspect of graves in remote districts of England.
