About this book
The Comedy & Tragedy of the Second Empire concerns Paris society in the sixties, with letters of Napoleon III., M. Pietri and Comte de la Chapelle and portraits of the period. The opening chapter places a fair-complexioned, golden-haired girl of fourteen on a balcony of the Delesserts’ house in August, 1840, looking down at a man escorted by two gendarmes.
An observer of the firing describes the first deafening effect of a battery's noise, followed by getting used to the sound as time dragged very slowly. The observer says the period of looking on was not particularly exciting and describes the battery engaged in a duel with a distant French battery. The Saxon gunners are described as seeming unconcerned with what happened elsewhere, while other batteries were doing the same work across an illimitable area.
