About this book
The Spanish Tragedie is a play by Thomas Kyd. Its title page describes the work as concerning Don Horatio, Bel-Imperia and old Hieronimo, newly corrected and amended of such gross faults as passed in the first impression. This electronic text is based on the earliest extant edition, with some bracketed text taken from John Matthews Manly's 1897 edition, and keeps the early spelling.
In one passage Andrea tells of his journey past Pluto and Proserpine to the Elysian green, and Revenge says they will sit down to watch and serve as Chorus. Act I, scene 1 is set at the Spanish court, where the General brings the King news of victory and tribute from Portugal. In Act III, scene 6, Hieronimo speaks with the Deputy about the duties of his office. In another passage Hieronimo names himself the hopeless father of a hapless son and addresses the princes.
