About this book

The Cultivation of the Native Grape, and Manufacture of American Wines is a work by George Husmann, of Hermann, Missouri. The index lists The Propagating House, Mode of Operating, Location and Soil, Preparing the Soil, and Choice of Varieties such as The Concord, Norton's Virginia and Herbemont. The book retells a tradition in which Leif, who had lately been converted to Christ our Lord, stood calmly at the helm, and in which Tyrker, who alone was missing, was met laden down with grapes.

The tradition says Leif gave a name to the country and called it Vinland, or Wineland. On packing, the text says grapes should be packed in low, shallow boxes, say six inches high, so that they will hold about two layers of grapes, and that the grapes must be perfectly dry when gathered. A cost list for an acre of Herbemont gives preparing ground, 700 first class plants, 450 posts at 10 cents each, 450 stakes at 3 cents each and 600 lbs. wire at 16 cents per lb.
