About this book

Wallenstein examines a paper of signatures and declares that he has the generals’ written promise, while noticing that one expected name is absent. Wallenstein says the regiments refuse to march for Flanders, have sent a written remonstrance and openly resist the imperial orders. Wallenstein calls the regiments' open resistance to the imperial orders the first step towards revolt.

Wallenstein’s soliloquy asks whether he can no longer draw back at will, and whether merely entertaining a deed has made its performance necessary. Wallenstein says that war will swallow everyone, claims Austria desires war rather than peace, and attributes his fall to his own pursuit of peace.
