About this book

The Maid of Orleans is a work by Friedrich Schiller, translated by Anna Swanwick, and it is divided into acts and scenes. The cast list names Charles the Seventh, King of France, Queen Isabel, Agnes Sorel and Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy. A character named Thibaut says that for three successive nights he has beheld Johanna sitting on the throne at Rheims, and calls it a warning dream that reveals a vain and sinful longing.

A character named Raimond asks who cherishes a purer, humbler mind than the pious daughter of the person addressed. Act III is set at the residence of the king at Chalons on the Marne, and Dunois speaks of true heart-friends, brothers in arms, and asks that the love of woman not rend the bond. A character named Lionel says “Let them storm on”, that the castle is firm, and that he will be buried beneath its ruins before he yields.
