About this book

The Ghost-Seer has a narrator proposing to relate an adventure that may seem incredible, though he witnessed much of it himself. The narrator presents the account as a possible contribution to the history of deception and the aberrations of human intellect. An encounter in Venice includes warnings that a wealthy Venetian can employ a bravo to take revenge against the prince.

Officers of the Inquisition produce a government order requiring the narrator and the prince to accompany them immediately. The escorted party is taken to a waiting gondola and blindfolded before landing. The narrator describes a dim hall hung with black, where old men dressed in black form a silent assembly.
