The Dope on Mars, by Jack Sharkey, carries the line "Somebody had to get the human angle on this trip ... but what was humane about sending me?" The narrator says his agent got him the job of going along to write up the first trip to Mars, and Louie tells him the public wants the human slant on things. The narrator says he went on the first trip to Mars and kept a diary, and that it is honest.
The diary says there are five of us on board, and names Dwight Kroger as the biochemist, Jones as the co-pilot and Lloyd Streeter as the navigator. One entry says the party has found Kroger and Pat with the help of the aliens, whom the writer might call the Martians, and that the aliens took the rifles away and threw them into the stream. An entry dated March 4, 1962 says Earth fills the screen in the control room, and that Pat says if they are lucky he might be able to use the bit of fuel left to set them in a descending spiral into one of the oceans.
