About this book
The Holes Around Mars is by Jerome Bixby, and its opening blurb says "Science said it could not be, but there it was." The narrator says Hugh Allenby, who is in command of the expedition, nearly drove the crew nuts with his puns on the first expedition to Mars.
The crew gathers around a rock with a neat round four-inch hole running straight through it, and Allenby says softly, "An artifact." Janus says "A hole," Gonzales adds "In a rock," and Randolph says "Round." The narrator, a mineralogist, says of the hole: "Not drilled. Not chipped. Not melted. Certainly not eroded." Janus argues seriously that he once read that Mars never had any glaciers, and the crew shudders. A man in headphones tells an unbelieving audience of "an exceedingly small body" about four inches in diameter that travels at a mean distance of four feet above the surface of the planet.
