About this book

The Eagle’s Heart, by Hamlin Garland, opens with a chapter headed His Youth that introduces Harold. The contents list chapters called The young eagle strikes, The trial, The eagle's eyes grow dim and The cage opens.

The text says that Harold was considered the ringleader, but that in reality he was not a leader of these raids, and that the real leaders were the two sons of the village shoemaker. The text describes a handsome and scholarly young preacher who, in calm, unhesitating speech, argues from a text of Hebrew scripture about right and wrong among men and urges his congregation to right thinking and right action. Harold sees others quite as brutally rebuffed as he had been, and finds that men were swarming for every place.

Hamlin Garland

A boyhood on farms in Wisconsin, Iowa and Dakota Territory gave Hamlin Garland the material he worked for fifty years. Born in 1860 near West Salem, Wisconsin, he left for Boston in 1884, read Henry George in the public library, and turned single-tax anger into fiction that refused to make prairie farming look picturesque.
