About this book

The Dead Command is by Vicente Blasco Ibáñez, translated from the Spanish Los muertos mandan by Frances Douglas and published in New York in 1919. It is divided into three parts of four chapters each. The first chapter, A Majorcan Palace, opens with Jaime Febrer rising at nine o'clock while old Antonia, a faithful servant who has attended him since his birth, bustles about his room.

In one passage Jaime walks through the palace past a closed chapel and the archives to a huge kitchen that shows little use, and a small dining room where the long table is covered in cracked oil-cloth. Another passage has a man thinking of the young men who will come to his house twice a week to court Margalida, whose father, Señor Pèp, means to leave Can Mallorquí to a son-in-law.
