About this book

A young American arrives in the imagined principality of Graustark hoping to find the romance that his travels have promised. Truxton King comes from a wealthy New York family, whose plans for him divide between the steel business and diplomatic service. His own wish is for adventure. At the gates of Edelweiss, and then over dinner at the Hotel Regengetz, he begins to believe he has reached the place he was seeking.

George Barr McCutcheon's novel combines romantic expectations with danger at a royal court. Conspirators discuss Count Marlanx's plans against the government, threats to the prince, and the precautions taken by the American Tullis. King himself has become their prisoner. The appeal lies in the contrast between a traveller's storybook hopes and the practical struggle for power unfolding around him.
