About this book

A dispute over an old palace floor introduces Walter Scott's interest in the uneasy relationship between history and everyday life. In the introductory narrative, Mrs. Policy defends stains associated with Rizzio's death while a visiting salesman tries to demonstrate a cleaning product. The scene mixes comedy with questions about memory, evidence and the value attached to places where the past remains visible.

The historical novel turns to Perth and Scotland during the reign of Robert III, bringing merchants, social rank and noble power into its scope. In the middle excerpt, Ramorny presses the Duke of Rothsay toward a scheme against Albany, and Rothsay challenges the ambition and guilt behind the proposal. Political conversation becomes a contest over loyalty and the means of ruling. Readers drawn to Scottish historical fiction will find both the texture of remembered places and the dangerous calculations of court life.
