About this book
The Philosophy of Mathematics is translated from the Cours de Philosophie Positive of Auguste Comte, by W. M. Gillespie. The preface says the translator was induced to lay the work before his fellow-teachers and students of Mathematics in a more accessible form than that in which it has hitherto appeared. The preface speaks of a want of a comprehensive map of the wide region of mathematical science, a bird's-eye view of its leading features.
The text says that the measurement of one straight line by another, certainly the most simple comparison we can conceive, can nevertheless scarcely ever be effected directly. The text says that differential equations will have to be regarded as presenting cases which are more and more implicit, as they are of a higher order. The text gives the equation x m + y m = c as one that, by its perfect symmetry, should evidently give a curve composed of four identical quarters.
