About this book

John Venn's The Logic of Chance is an essay on the foundations and province of the theory of probability, with special reference to its logical bearings and its application to moral and social science and to statistics. This third edition, rewritten and enlarged, is dated 1888, and the title page records a first edition printed in 1866 and a second in 1876. The preface to the first edition states that the essay is in no sense mathematical.

Venn builds on the idea of a series: the successive throws of a penny, or the statement that two new-born children in three fail to attain the age of sixty-three, only make sense across a long succession of instances. One passage poses a problem in inverse probability, asking how to tell whether an arrangement came about by chance or by deliberate design. Another compares a good marksman and a bad marksman, whose shots follow the same general law but thin off at different rates.
