About this book
The Friendly Daemon, or The Generous Apparition, is by Daniel Defoe and is presented as a true narrative of a miraculous cure. The opening says the cure was newly performed upon the famous Deaf and Dumb Gentleman, Dr. Duncan Campbel, by a familiar Spirit that appeared to him in a white Surplice, like a Cathedral singing Boy. One writer says he was struck at first with a kind of Epilepsy and deprived of all his Senses in an Instant, falling down in a publick Coffee-House.
One story tells of a Butler visited at his bedside by one of the Ghostly Company, who told him that if he offered to stir out the next Day, he would be carried away. A further story names Mr. Howel and Sir Kenelm, and has the Knight take the Garter out of the Liquor to dry it before the Fire.
