The first book in the Herbert West Series is “The Friendship of Mortals,” written by Audrey Driscoll. The narrative takes place in 1910 in Arkham, Massachusetts. At Miskatonic University, Charles Milburn, a librarian befriends Herbert West a questionable medical student. West convinces Charles to help him with his covert experiments by claiming he can bring the dead back to life.
Their efforts bear fruit, but not without a hint of catastrophe. Between his intriguing acquaintance and his developing feelings for Alma Halsey, the dean of medicine’s daughter, Charles finds himself divided. Charles must choose between saving his friend’s life and following his conscience as West’s reputation worsens.
