About this book
The Gist of Swedenborg is compiled by Julian K. Smyth and William F. Wunsch. The contents list names, among others, Marriage, The Sacred Scriptures, The Life of Charity and Faith and The Divine Providence. The foreword says that Swedenborg's theological writings comprise some thirty or more substantial volumes, the result of the most concentrated labor extending over a period of twenty-seven years.
The text says that for the rest of his long life Swedenborg gave himself with unremitting labor but with a saving calm to this commanding cause, publishing his great Latin volumes of Scripture interpretation and of theological teaching at Amsterdam or London, at first anonymously. Under the heading The Patriotism of Charity, the text says one's country is the neighbor more than a society, for it consists of many societies, and consequently the love of it is a more extended and a higher love. Under the heading A New Church, the text says it was foretold in the Apocalypse that at the end of the former Church a New Church was to be instituted, in which the chief teaching would be that God is One in Person as well as in Essence.
