About this book
The Grain of Dust by David Graham Phillips is a novel whose account introduces the offices of corporation lawyers. The dictation scene describes a man carefully choosing his words for perhaps a quarter of an hour before pacing as a new idea takes shape. The narration describes the man's astonishment at a girl whose appearance seems transformed from an uninteresting nonentity into a beautiful, world-weary woman.
A conversation about an engagement raises an allegation that a man has been giving money to a girl, and the reply adds her father. The narration calls Josephine's greeting to Dorothy a treacherous attempt at insult, while Norman feels pride in his bride's unawareness of the insult.
