About this book
The Great Steel Strike and its Lessons is by William Z. Foster, with an introduction by John A. Fitch. The introduction says half a million men are employed in the steel industry of the United States, and that the principal mills are operating on a 12-hour work schedule. The introduction says these half million men have, for the most part, no opportunity to discuss with their employers the conditions of their work.
The text says the trade-union movement won a great moral victory in the steel strike and the campaign that preceded it, which more than offsets the failure of the strike itself. A first-person account says that, before there was time to comply with a demand to move on, the speaker was struck by the State Policeman. The text says that several of the Amalgamated Association's general officers, from the beginning, considered the movement with pessimism, often with hostility.
