About this book
Hampstead and Marylebone is by G. E. Mitton and is edited by Sir Walter Besant. Seymour, writing in 1735, describes Hampstead as a place much more frequented by good company than can well be expected considering its vicinity to London. The text calls Hampstead itself now a town of 80,000 people and almost entirely modern, and says the Heath remains the only wild piece of ground within easy reach of the Londoner.
The text says the Duke of Newcastle's only child, Henrietta, married Edward Harley, who succeeded his father as Earl of Oxford and Mortimer. Edward Harley carried on his father's collection of books and MSS., the text says, and formed what was afterwards known as the Harleian Collection. The book carries a list of places and institutions with numbers beside them, such as Hospitals: Consumption, 28 Hampstead, 15 Middlesex, 105 North-Western, 49.
