About this book
The Holes and John Smith is by Edward W. Ludwig, and its blurb describes a ragged little man out of a hole who was money in the bank to Stanley's four-piece combo and whose music was straight from heaven. Jimmie Stanley sits on the bandstand of the candle-lit cocktail lounge with his four-piece combo, but only three of them are there, because Ziggy, the bass fiddle man, had nearly sliced off two fingers while opening a can of ice-fish. Ke-teeli, the boss, shrills "Where ees museek?" and squeaks "Ees no feedle man, ees no job."
Jimmie asks John, "where have you been hiding?" and offers, "How about playing with us steady?" Jimmie also says "You can stay with me and it won't cost you a cent." John, Jimmie says, "just slipped out of my grasp" and was gone, and Jimmie jumped in the manhole after him but found "nothing but the smell of ozone".
