About this book
The House of the Lord is a study of holy sanctuaries ancient and modern, with plates illustrating modern temples. The preface describes the Latter-day Saints as temple builders and notes continuing questions about the purpose of their work and the ordinances administered. The historical account says Herod I began reconstructing the decayed Temple of Zerubbabel about sixteen years before the birth of Christ.
The account of preparations for departure describes people covering the temple foundations, refilling excavations, and concealing every trace of masonry. The description of the covered foundations records a site resembling a roughly ploughed field, with no foundation work above ground level. The description of the Sealing Room for the Living explains that couples kneel at its altar to enter an eternal covenant.
