About this book
The Immortal; or, One of the Forty, is by Alphonse Daudet. The front matter says the book was translated from the French by A. W. Verrall and Margaret D. G. Verrall. The list of illustrations names, among others, There’s My Warrior and A Select Reception, at the Padovani Mansion.
Paul is stupefied by a remark that the Duchess was born in 1827, when the year is 1880. Freydet, hurt by a crushing glance from the Academician, thinks “He did not recognise me.” A court scene has a little humpback brought to the prisoner’s box, with stories of compromising letters and of an account mentioning the names of two or three well-known ladies of fashion.
