About this book
The Independence of Claire is a book by Mrs. George de Horne Vaizey. Claire Gifford stands in the salon of the Brussels pension that has been her home for the last three years, and bends her brows over an all-absorbing problem. Claire asks herself whether she can marry him, and her brain answers that she must while her heart rebels. Claire's choice lies between matrimony or teaching: a husband whom she did not love, who was twenty years her senior, or work and poverty with the advantages of freedom and independence.
Cecil says it was so nice to talk to a man again after everlasting women, and that the man looked handsome, big and strong, and unlike a member of staff. Janet leads the way to a table in the farthest corner of the room, and they talk trivialities until the ordered dishes are set on the table. Claire has ordered coffee and drinks eagerly, hoping that the physical refreshment will help to steady her nerves.
