About this book
The Inns of Court is by Cecil Headlam. The book calls the stone gate-house, designed by Christopher Wren, the scene of so many historic pageants when Lord Mayors have received their Sovereigns. The book says that Titus Oates and Daniel de Foe stood in the pillory, the latter for publishing his scandalous and seditious pamphlet, 'The Shortest Way with the Dissenters.'
The book says one of the chief features of Lincoln's Inn is the Tudor Gateway, which forms the main entrance into Chancery Lane. The book says that the liberality of Sir Thomas Lovell, one of the Benchers of the Society, and Treasurer of the Household of Henry VII., was chiefly responsible for its erection. The book describes the magnificent Gatehouse, with its flanking Towers of brick, as built in 1518, whilst Wolsey was Chancellor.
