About this book

A Lithuanian wedding feast in the back room of a Chicago saloon opens the novel. The bride, Ona, is not yet sixteen; her husband Jurgis Rudkus is a huge young man who can lift a quarter of beef without a stagger. Their families have come from Lithuania to the district behind the stockyards.

What follows is a story of work and money. Jurgis finds jobs in the meat-packing plants, and the family faces speeded-up work, winter cold, debt and, for Jurgis, a spell in jail, while younger relatives sell newspapers and their mother begs at doors.

Upton Sinclair, born in 1878, published the book in 1906 and dedicated it "To the Workingmen of America". Readers come to it for its picture of immigrant labour and city poverty, and for the political argument it makes through one family's fortunes.
