About this book

Seth Appleby and his wife call each other Father and Mother, have been married for more than forty years, and still hold hands in corners. He is a clerk in Pilkings's shoe store on Sixth Avenue, she keeps their small New York flat with a tabby cat and a canary, and every July Seth puts on a polite little cough to win two weeks off for their trip to a Cape Cod farmhouse.

Written in 1917 by the future Nobel Prize winner Sinclair Lewis, the novel calls itself a story for lovers, and its dedication admits it is a light excursion rather than the realism he meant to write. Later the Applebys come back from a Cape Cod tea room to a single shabby rented room in the city, out of work yet still cheerful, and Seth goes shyly to ask for his old job.

Readers who know Lewis for sharper books will find him here in a warm, comic mood, writing about the quiet clerks and shopkeepers "forgotten by the city they have built."

About the author

Sinclair Lewis

Sinclair Lewis (1885 to 1951) was an American novelist famous for skewering the conformity and hypocrisy of small-town and business America in the 1920s. His run of major novels earned him the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1930, the first awarded to an American.
