About this book

The Land of Heart's Desire lists its persons as Maurteen Bruin, Shawn Bruin, Father Hart, Bridget Bruin, Maire Bruin and a Faery Child. The scene is laid in the Barony of Kilmacowen in the county of Sligo, and the time is the end of Eighteenth Century. The note adds that the characters are supposed to speak in Gaelic. Father Hart asks what the book may be, and Maurteen Bruin answers, I do not rightly know: It has been in the thatch for fifty years.

Maurteen Bruin says, I hear a child outside, And will go bring her in out of the cold. The Child says, I tire of winds and waters and pale lights! The Child calls, White bird, white bird, come with me, little bird!
