About this book
The Letters of Cassiodorus is a condensed translation of the Variae Epistolae of Magnus Aurelius Cassiodorus Senator, with an introduction by Thomas Hodgkin, dated London 1886. The introduction traces the writer's family through his great grandfather and grandfather, who is said to have gone on an embassy to Attila, and it points readers to the letters for the information.
In one passage a letter is followed by an edict of King Theodoric saying that powerful houses are failing to pay their share of the taxes, and inviting the provincials to state their grievances frankly. Another passage instructs that peasants dig a series of wide pits near the mountains of Caprarius and the walls, so that no one can enter that way.
