About this book
Deep in the Forest of Burzee, immortal beings tend the trees and celebrate the changing seasons. The wood-nymph Necile longs for something beyond her familiar duties, and a human infant at the forest edge gives her a new purpose. She carries the child into the woods after hearing how the Master Woodsman Ak has protected him. L. Frank Baum builds his Christmas story around this meeting between human vulnerability and a woodland society of fairies, nymphs, Knooks and Ryls.
The tale follows Claus through youth, manhood and old age, connecting his life with toys, reindeer, stockings and Christmas trees. In the Laughing Valley, his shelves fill with handmade animals, dolls and painted clay playthings. The hostile Awgwas steal his gifts and hinder the children who try to reach him, prompting Claus to seek Ak's help.
