About this book

The life of Friedrich Nietzsche is by Daniel Halévy, translated by J. M. Mone with an introduction by T. M. Kettle. The contents list chapters titled Childhood, Years of Youth, Friedrich Nietzsche and Richard Wagner, Crisis and Convalescence, The Labour of Zarathustra and The Final Solitude.

The introduction says the duel between Nietzsche and civilisation is long since over, and that Nietzsche is now to be judged as he appears in the serene atmosphere of history. A quoted account tells of a dream of mournful organ music, as if at a burial, in which a father appeared clad in his shroud, and of a little brother Joseph who fell ill and died. The book says Nietzsche, wounded to the death, wishes to return blow for blow, with Richard Wagner as his mark, and has him think It is I who made Wagnerism; it is I who must unmake it.
