About this book
A narrator says he has often wondered whether he would have urged Wrexler to come with him if he had known what Rougemont would do to him. The narrator says he was left everything with only two injunctions: that a certain sum of money be set aside to keep the château always in its present condition, and that he spend at least half his time in it. The narrator says that he and Wrexler had been friends since the day when two lonely boys had been put by chance into the same room at school.
One speaker tells listeners that Rougemont means Red Mountain, that the place was before that called Hôtel d'Harcourt, and that Mademoiselle Helene was very beautiful and had many suitors. The narrator says he unlocked a casket that contained many pages closely written in his father's hand, with instructions as to his future conduct.
